Report – Newcastle Offered Former Arsenal Striker

The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder is reporting that Newcastle have been offered ex-Arsenal and Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck.

The 28-year-old is currently a free agent after being running down his contract with Arsenal.

This is what Arsenal’s head of football Raul Sanllehi said on Arsenal’s official website earlier this summer:

“In ways it is quite similar to the Aaron situation. We were in talks with him to see if [he would stay or go], he had several offers, he decided to continue in the club until the end of the contract. We respected that.

“We knew that he was going to add a lot to the club over the last year, but again, we were in the last year of contract so it was a very similar situation [to Ramsey].”

He was offered a new deal earlier in the year but then suffered a terrible ankle injury against Sporting Lisbon in November which ended his season.

Danny Welbeck– offered to Newcastle

While his strike rate at about 1 goal in 4 games is not by any means prolific, he has often been deployed out wide.

He is a very good player when fit and would slot in nicely in a two striker formation like the one deployed against West Ham yesterday.

We are not quite sure of this one however, as it comes on the heels of a link to Andy Carroll. Both of these links could just be due to them being available and Newcastle being short of strikers.

Our thinking on Welbeck is kind of along the same lines as with Andy Carroll. If either is brought in as a third forward signing this summer then that would be fine with us.

However, we would still expect another forward to be signed, in addition to Joelinton, prior to bringing in either Carroll or Welbeck.

There is also the issue of wages, as both players would have to accept deals with significantly lower wages then they are accustomed to.

However, it does not seem that too many teams are knocking down either player’s door at the moment.
