Dharmesh Sheth interrupted Sky Sports News’ adverts to bring an update on Newcastle United’s swoop to sign Joelinton from Hoffenheim on Thursday evening.
Hoffenheim manager Alfred Schreuder has confirmed that Joelinton, 22, will be leaving the Bundesliga club before the summer transfer window and according to Sheth, his switch to Newcastle is edging ever closer with talks underway.
“Sorry about that, I know the director went straight to those pictures. I can only apologise to him after the show,” the journalist said on Sky Sports News on Thursday night [07:13pm] as he talked over the adverts to bring the update.
“But this is important because a lot of Newcastle United fans have been tweeting in to Sky Sports News; ‘what is happening with Joelinton?’
“Well, the Hoffenheim manager has confirmed that Joelinton will be leaving the club.
“We’ve been told that Newcastle are in talks over the 22-year-old.
“He was left out of their squad for a pre-season game on Wednesday and their manager Alfred Schreuder has said the following: ‘It’s not my decision, that’s what the club does. It’s always the same in football. When players leave it also opens up room for other players and of course it’s a shame he’s leaving but it’s also a matter of philosophy’.
“It looks like Newcastle United’s move Joelinton is moving ever closer.”
Joelinton scored 11 goals and supplied nine assists in all competitions for Hoffenheim last season and the Brazilian looks set to cost Newcastle £36.2million, as reported by German newspaper Kicker.
It would seem as though this deal is very close to completion now that Hoffenheim’s manager is confirming that the striker is on his way out of the German club. Unless there’s an unexpected twist in the tale, Newcastle fans should be prepared to welcome a new player to the circus at St James’ Park. It’s good that the club has moved quickly to sign a new striker after Steve Bruce’s appointment was confirmed, but it has to be concerning that the newly-appointed Magpies boss has not really had much time to look over Joelinton to see whether or not he’d want him. Joelinton has been linked with Newcastle for a while now and it seems like a move that has been pushed forward by someone above Bruce. It might be a reason why Rafa Benitez has left. Benitez reportedly wanted more control over transfers – was he told that Joelinton would be signed whether he liked it or not?
