Calcio Mercato are reporting that Newcastle are readying an offer for Roma midfielder Maxime Gonalons.
The former French international reportedly has no future with the Italian club who are looking to offload the player for a reduced fee of €3.6m.
We have our doubts about this link but only because the player is already 30 years old and would not fit Newcastle’s strict transfer policy.
This is what Calcio Mercato is reporting:
Maxime Gonalons spent the last season on loan with La Liga side Sevilla but has returned to his parent club, Roma.
However, his time at the club may not last long, with Premier League side Newcastle United viewing the Frenchman as a low-cost signing to make this summer; the Geordie side ready to hand Roma sporting director Gianluca Petrachi with an offer in the coming days.
Maxime moved to Roma from Lyon in the summer of 2017. He had been a product of the Lyon youth academy.
Maxime Gonalons– French defensive midfielder
During the past two seasons Gonalons has been hampered by severe injuries. Especially this last season on loan at Sevilla where he suffered three major injuries and was only able to make 13 appearances in total.
Prior to his move to Roma, his injury record was fine. He also served as Lyon’s captain for years so will have some good leadership qualities.
Bringing Gonalons in may not be too bad of an idea as he will not cost much and can play in a position of need at defensive midfield as well as provide cover in central defense.
With Mo Diame already out the door and Isaac Hayden likely to follow, Gonalons could be who the club is looking at as some cheap cover.
We have our doubts about this link but only due to his age. If he has fully gotten over his injury troubles of late, we think Maxime Gonalons would be a decent addition to the squad in what could be a trying year for Newcastle United.
