Matt Ritchie Speaks Of Life Without Rafa Benitez

The Shields Gazette have an article on Matt Ritchie’s comments at today’s press conference in Nanjing.

They have a bit more substance than the ones provided by co-caretaker manager Ben Dawson.

This is what Matt Ritchie has said this morning:

“To see the manager leave was disappointing.

“He had a good reign at the club – it was a decision taken between the manager and the club’s owners.

“We now look forward to a new manager and a new season.

“The key thing I’ve said since I’ve been at this club is we’ve got to create a togetherness, and everybody pulling in the same direction. Togetherness is key for me.

“Ben and Neil’s sessions have been of high quality and good intensity so we’re not missing anything in that respect.

“The new manager will want to add players but we’re preparing so that when the new manager does come in, we can hit the ground running.”

These are some good words by Matt Ritchie as he went a little further than Ben Dawson did by mentioning the disappointment that Rafa Benitez is no longer at the club.

Matt has always been a leader at the club and is a very passionate player. He will no doubt be very upset with the turn of events this summer.

Rafa Benitez brought Matt to the club when we were relegated from Bournemouth. That showed the pull that Rafa had while at the club.

Newcastle may have difficulty recruiting players this summer due to what has transpired over the past few months.

We are glad that the squad has solid leadership with players like Jamaal Lascelles and Matt Ritchie, who have got on with their job and remained professional in difficult circumstances.
