Alexis Claude-Maurice was reported to be a target of Newcastle’s by a close source to the player last month. The player, prior to the link to Newcastle, was widely speculated to be on his way to Arsenal. The London club even were said to have had two bids turned down for young Frenchman.
There is a recent report in 90Min that claims all of the talk of a move to England came from Claude-Maurice’s club Lorient in order to drum up interest in the player.
The report in 90min from late last month states the following:
However, sources close to the player have indicated to 90min that talk of a move to England was never on the agenda – despite Lorient’s best efforts to drum up interest.
Lorient are understood to have issued at least one mandate to British agents in the hope of engineering a lucrative move to England – with one of them thought to be Mark McKay, son of notorious former agent Willie. This is in spite of Claude-Maurice making it clear to Lorient that he had no desire to move to the Premier League at this point in his career.
Apparently, all of the links to the Premier League were engineered in order to up the ante for the young player. This was done despite the player revealing that he was not looking for a move to the Premier League at this point.
The player eventually in an interview to L’equipe declared his interest in joining Borussia Monchengladbach. He may have done this out of frustration but it seemed to have worked.
This is what he said in late June to the French publication:
“I would have liked to have gone up with the club that formed me at youth level. I feel like it is the moment to leave, to join a club that is playing at a higher level… I want to join Gladbach. They are a club that focuses on young players, there is a good structure, they are playing in the Europa League. I like their project & it suits me.”
After Alexis Claude-Maurice made this statement the links to a move to England died down. The new report in 90Min says that Claude-Maurice is actually close to a move to the German club though that has not materialized as of yet.
