We were linked with Benfica right-back Andre Almeida earlier this month though it was a dubious one at most.
The player is about to turn twenty-nine in September and was rated at around £8M. While the fee would have been in Ashley’s range, the player’s age certainly was not.
A report today in O Jogo claims that Almeida will extend his contract with Benfica for another two years to 2023.
He was excellent for the Lisbon club last year making 53 appearances and recording 12 assists.
With just DeAndre Yedlin and Javier Manquillo at the right-back position, we are hopeful that Newcastle will try to make an upgrade this summer. Almeida certainly would have been that for at least the next few seasons.
Of course, looking for upgrades and signing players in their prime to improve upon the results of a prior season is only a concept for proper football clubs which Newcastle certainly are not at the moment.
We are not sure if any of these Benfica links were substantial as both this one and the Rafa Silva link were highly unlikely at best.
