Two Midfield Legends Now In Running For Newcastle Post

The Sun has a report linking two former Premier League greats to the Newcastle job in Steven Gerrard and Patrick Vieira

There is also an additional report in the Northen Echo claiming that Newcastle are confident they could pry Gerrard away from Rangers this summer even though he has publicly stated his desire to continue at Ibrox.

The Patrick Vieira link is interesting as four years ago it was reported that he was in strong contention for the vacant position subsequently filled by the disastrous Steven McClaren.

Steven Gerrard– would he leave Rangers to try and fill Rafa’s void?

Steven Gerrard has only been manager at Rangers, his first senior position, since last summer.

The Liverpool legend guided Rangers to a second-place finish for what was an improvement of one place and eight points over the previous year under then boss Graeme Murty.

His ties to Rafa Benitez will lead to some doubt as to whether this is a realistic target. Would Gerrard would be willing to come to Newcastle after the treatment of Rafa Benitez?

Ex-Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira is currently the manager at OGC Nice where he too only joined this past summer, leading the French club to a 7th place finish.

Vieira previously managed in the MLS for New York City FC where he was appointed by former Sunderland and USA midfielder Claudio Reyna. He took the position in 2016 did an outstanding job

In Vieira’s two years at NYCFC he guided them to 4th and then a 2nd place finish. This was after the club finished 17th the year before he took charge.

While both of these ex-players are inexperienced, they do seem to have something about them.

If we cannot have a world-class manager in charge of the club like Rafa Benitez, we would rather see someone young with potential given the chance.

While it may end up being a disaster like Remi Garde was at Aston Villa. We would prefer a roll of the dice to some of the usual suspects like David Moyes or Claudio Ranieri.
